The NCP431 integrated circuit is a three-terminal programmable shunt regulator diode. These ICs are direct upgrades from the industry standard TL431A. These monolithic integrated circuit voltage references operate as a low temperature coefficient Zener, programmable from Vref to 36 V with two external resistors. These devices have a wide operating current range of 40 µA to 100 mA and a typical dynamic impedance of 0.22Ω. The properties of these references make them excellent replacements for Zener diodes in many applications, such as digital voltmeters, power supplies, and operational amplifier circuits. The 2.5 V reference makes it easy to obtain a stable reference from a 5.0 V logic supply, and since the NCP431 operates as a shunt regulator, it can be used as both a positive and a negative voltage reference. The low minimum operating current makes this device an excellent choice as an auxiliary regulator in SMPS adapters with very low no-load power consumption. The NCP432 has the exact same co-mesh electrical specifications as the NCP431 except for the pin configuration.
